Contemporary abstract painter Laurie DeVault invites viewers into a world where creative freedom reigns supreme. Unbound by the constraints of objective reality—proportion, perspective, and precise light placement—she discovers liberation in the abstract realm, leaving representational accuracy to those who excel at capturing bowls of fruit or ocean waves.

In a world governed by rules and expectations, DeVault's canvas becomes a sanctuary of possibility. Through painting, she breaks free from limitations that suppress growth and creative expression, including the most oppressive of all: self-imposed expectations.
Each work begins with fearless anticipation felt "deep in the bones." Quick black marks made with a palette knife establish the foundation—the structural bones of each piece. From there, an unplanned journey unfolds. Color choices emerge from pure feeling: sometimes vibrant primaries straight from the tube, other times muted tones mixed for quieter presence.

Working primarily in acrylics, DeVault embraces their lush tones and layering capabilities. The creative process becomes an intimate dance between artist and emerging artwork. She listens to what the paint reveals, following its lead while staying "out of her own way" to preserve the joy of creation.

Colors layer around and through the original black marks, building complexity and depth. Occasionally, recognizable forms emerge from random shapes—a face, tree, or animal. Some works feature intentionally recognizable objects, such as the "Houses on a Hill" series inspired by her favorite painter, Paul Klee.

Whether bold and bright or soft and dreamy, DeVault's paintings stand as testament to authenticity and joy, inviting viewers to experience the liberation found in abstract expression.
